Antonino Sparacino, driven by poverty and a lack of future in the village of Ali Superiore, Sicily, decides to leave his family and the oppressive rule of the local mafia landowners ("capu"). Along with his childhood friends, the volatile Luca Ponto and the timid Santo Sparacino, he embarks on a grueling trek to Messina to find a ship to America.
